Vodafone Germany has suffered a compromise of its systems as hackers have stolen data concerning two million of its customers. The data included names, addresses, dates of birth, gender, sort codes and account numbers. However, the telecoms giant assured people that there was not enough data to be able to access people’s bank accounts. It still apologised for the attack, despite saying that its IT systems met the highest possible standards. It believes that insider knowledge was the cause and warned its customers to remain vigilant, particularly against phishing attacks that seek to gain security data from unsuspecting customers through fake emails. The question is: if a large company with excellent security systems can suffer like this, is any system safe?
